Philly ska/power pop band Catbite have announced a new EP, Doom Garden, that was produced, engineered, and mixed by illuminati hotties’ Sarah Tuzdin and features two very cool guest vocalists: Fall Out Boy singer Patrick Stump and Sweet Pill singer Zayna Youssef, the former of whom also plays trumpet (!) on it. It follows the emo-pop superstar very publicly discussing his ska roots on the In Defense of Ska podcast and in the second edition of the IDOS book.
The first single is “Die In Denver,” and it feels like a clear creative leap for this band. From the crisply-distorted guitars to the glittery synth solo, it’s a big alt-rock anthem that instantly stands out in the Catbite catalog, but still with a trademark Catbite hook and a ska undercurrent. Check out the song and its Jak Kerley-diected video below. The EP comes out May 9 via Bad Time Records (pre-order).
About the new EP, vocalist Brit Luna says, “The songs on ‘Doom Garden’ are different from anything we’ve written before. I took a lot of time to self-reflect on my own human experience and how it has been affected by everything around me and within me. It’s really difficult to look inward and feel like you’re a terrible person. These songs helped me begin to heal parts of myself that I had long forgotten or pushed away. Being human is hard, but it’s not all bad.”
Catbite were recently announced to support the second leg of Less Than Jake‘s ‘Summer Circus’ tour with Fishbone and The Suicide Machines, and they also just announced a headlining tour with support from Rodeo Boys on the Midwest dates and The OGBMs on the East Coast dates. The run with The OGBMs hits NYC’s TV Eye on May 31. Tickets go on sale Friday (2/28) at 10 AM. All dates are listed below.
Catbite also recently teamed with Against Me!’s Laura Jane Grace to release a live Operation Ivy covers album to raise money for LA wildfire relief. We also recently reflected on their 2019 self-titled debut LP in our list of the best punk albums of 2015-2019.
