New Pornographers‘ A.C. Newman is celebrating the 20th anniversary of his terrific solo debut, The Slow Wonder, with a new vinyl reissue and a few East Coast dates where he’ll play the album live in full.
The reissue album comes with the launch of Newman’s Substack, which is the only place you can buy it. The album’s been out of print for nearly 20 years and this cream-colored pressing is limited to 500 copies. Head to his Substack for full details.
“I made ‘The Slow Wonder’ way back when simply because I could, because I was lucky enough to be living off music and wanted to use that time I’d been given,” Newman writes, announcing the reissue. “Neko was busy for all of 2004 and I wanted to stay busy doing what I do: writing, recording and playing music. Did anyone want this? I had no idea, but I was going to do it anyway. So it is with this Substack. I do it with no real expectations. Hell, this approach worked once.”
Newman has also shared a new song, “The Lofoten Vortex,” available to paid subscribers of his substack.
As for the anniversary shows, Newman says he’ll play the album in full and in order. “Other songs, yes, but only after that album has been played front to back. Only after I’ve fulfilled that contractual obligation! My promise to you, kept.” Those shows happen this fall in Boston (11/20 @ City Winery), Washington, DC (11/23 @ Miracle Theatre), Philadelphia (11/24 @ City Winery), and Brooklyn (12/6 @ Baby’s All Right). Tickets go on sale Friday, September 20 at 10 AM.
