The Cure, The Twilight Sad @ Madison Square Garden
The Cure have been wowing fans on this current tour with three-hour sets filled with favorites, deep cuts, and a few new songs as well. Tonight kicks off their three-night MSG run.
Coney Island Mermaid Parade
Coney Island may slowly be getting a makeover but its annual freak flag extravaganza remains one of the last vestiges for Weird NYC.
Burger Beach Bash w/ Andrew W.K., GZA, Pentagram, Fucked Up, Har Mar Superstar, Cotillon, Mr. Twin Sister, The Mystery Lights @ MCU Park
Burger Records have been throwing crazy festivals on the West Coast for years — this is their first one in NYC. While a light on the garagey power pop you might associate with Burger, it’s a fun, diverse lineup and it’s hard to argue with the $15 admission. So if you’re going to the Mermaid Parade, why not keep the fun going?
Violent Femmes, Kristin Hersh @ Prospect Park Bandshell (Celebrate Brooklyn)
While later albums have been hit for miss, there is no denying that The Violent Femmes’ debut album is a stone-cold teen angst classic. It’s a lovely day, head to the bandshell and sing along with “Blister in the Sun,” “Add it Up,” and “Gone Daddy Gone.” Throwing Muses’ Kristin Hersh opens the show.
Kamasi Washington, Jacob Collier, Natasha Diggs (DJ Set) @ Central Park SummerStage
Part of the Blue Note Jazz Festival, saxophonist and jazz great Kamasi Washington headines this free SummerStage show that also features rising UK talent Jacob Collier.
Disclosure, Anderson Paak, Mobb Deep, Dusky, Justin Jay @ Forest Hills Stadium
This is the NYC edition of Disclosure’s Wildlife Festival, with a full day of acts, including soul/rap up-and-comer Anderson .Paak, Queensbridge rap legendsMobb Deep, British electronic duo Dusky, LA DJ Justin Jay, and of course Disclosure themselves.
Disclosure @ Flash Factory
Disclosure are also playing the Wildlife Afterparty at this Chelsea club.
Wreckless Eric @ The Grand Victory
One of the original artists signed to punk-era UK indie label Stiff, Wreckless Eric is best known for his hit “Whole Wide World,” but there’s a lot more to him than that. Go get acquainted tonight.
Tancred, Never, Fruit and Flowers @ ALPHAVILLE
Tancred, the more rocking project of Now, Now guitarist Jess Abbott, released their very good Polyvinyl debut Out of the Garden last month. They’ve been doing a lot of touring behind it, and tonight they headline this intimate NYC show.
Margaret Glaspy, Alexander F, Jennah Bell @ Baby’s All Right
NYC-via-California singer Margaret Glaspy makes raw early ’70s-inspired folk, with touches of ’90s indie rock and an occasional DGAF attitude.
Dashboard Confessional, Taking Back Sunday, Saosin, Early November, Motion City Soundtrack @ Jones Beach
The Taste of Chaos tour is, weirdly enough, focusing on classic late ’90s / early ’00s emo this year. Just about this whole lineup (sorry Saosin) has put out at least one defining album of the genre.
The Claypool Lennon Delirium, Dean Ween Group @ The Capitol Theatre
Last year, Primus and Ghost of a Saber-Tooth Tiger toured together, and frontmen Les Claypool and Sean Lennon clearly enjoyed each other’s company, as they’ve just released a collaborative album as The Claypool Lennon Delirium. This jammy night is furthered by the Dean Ween Group.
Summer Thunder w/ The Sun Ra Arkestra @ Union Pool
Union Pool’s fun Summer Thunder series continues today with two sets from Sun Ra Arkestra. Free.
Demolition Hammer @ Saint Vitus
Bronx thrash vets Demolition Hammer were initially around in the late ’80s and ’90s, but broke up in ’94 and their career was documented with an anthology release in 2008 on Century Media. They got back together earlier this year for a set at Marylan Deathfest, and this week they play two sold-out shows at Saint Vitus.

Jack Antonoff’s doing his NJ fest Shadow of the City again this year. If you’re into the slightly-alternative side of pop, the double bill of The 1975 and Carly Rae Jepsen may be pretty exciting. And if you like Jack Antonoff, the reunion of his band Steel Train may also be exciting. If you’re going, we especially think it’s worth catching rising dance-popster Shaimir.
