Newport Folk Festival 2024 day 1: Beck covered Dylan + Adrianne Lenker, Wednesday, MUNA, more (pics, video)
Newport Folk Festival returned to Fort Adams State Park for its 2024 edition over the weekend, kicking off on Friday (7/26). The festival is known for fostering surprise collaborations and guest appearances, and that was evident from day one this year with the appearance of Beck as a mystery guest on the Quad Stage. He began his set with a cover of Bob Dylan‘s “Maggie’s Farm,” and played an assortment of blues and folk standards, very in the spirit of the festival, before wrapping up with a few of his own songs. Big Thief‘s Buck Meek and Adrianne Lenker each played separate sets on Friday; Adrianne’s included what she said were “some Big Thief songs I’m testing out,” and she also brought Meek out towards the end. Friday also featured MUNA (who included one of Katie Gavin‘s new solo songs in their set, and told the crowd they were working on their fourth album); Guster (who were joined by members of the UMass Marching Band); Medicine Singers with Yonatan Gat and Lee Ranaldo; Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway; Wednesday; Allison Russell (who brought out Hozier for “Requiem”); Black Pumas (who brought out Mavis Staples for “Colors”); and Hozier (who closed out the night, bringing out Allison Russell, Mavis Staples, Joan Baez, The Lumineers’ Wesley Schultz, Madison Cunningham, Nathaniel Rateliff, Kaia Kater, William Prince, and more).
