Just days after performing in Central Park for Good Morning America, Green Day began their ‘Saviors’ stadium tour at DC’s Nationals Park last night (7/29). They opened with “The American Dream Is Killing Me,” the first song on their new album Saviors, and then, as promised, they went on to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Dookie and the 20th anniversary of American Idiot. They began by ripping through Dookie in full, from its fiery opening track “Burnout” to its hidden track “All My Myself,” and they followed the album with a few more Saviors songs (“Look Ma, No Brains!,” “One Eyed Bastard,” “Dilemma”) and a few others from throughout their career (“Know Your Enemy,” “Minority,” “Brain Stew”).
Then, for the second half of their set, Green Day played the entirety of their hour-long, 2004 rock opera American Idiot from start to finish. And after bringing that album to a close, they wrapped their lengthy set with two more: Saviors highlight “Bobby Sox” and a set-closing rendition of their 1997 ballad “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life).”
The show kicked off in the early evening with a set from teenage LA punks The Linda Lindas, who recently announced their new album No Obligation (due 10/11 via Epitaph) and who were fresh off opening for another stadium band, The Rolling Stones, in their hometown. Green Day’s old Bay Area punk pals Rancid were up next, and as USA Today reports, they only made it through their first two songs (“Maxwell Murder” from 1995’s …And Out Come the Wolves and the title track of last year’s Tomorrow Never Comes) before a storm came through and cut their set short. It caused an hour-long rain delay, but fortunately, the show resumed around 7:20 PM, and fellow ’90s rock giants The Smashing Pumpkins were able to play most of their opening set.
The Pumpkins had to cut three songs from their setlist, but still had time to bang out a handful of classics from Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, plus a few others from throughout their career and a cover of U2’s “Zoo Station.” (Nothing from their upcoming album Aghori Mhori Mei, which comes on Friday, 8/2, though.) It was the band’s first US show with new guitarist Kiki Wong (who’s also played with Taylor Swift, Usher, Bret Michaels, and others), who replaced Jeff Schroeder earlier this year.
Check out more pictures from the show (by Kevin Mazur/Getty Images for Live Nation), fan-shot videos of all four bands, and the setlists for all four bands below. The tour continues in Toronto on Thursday (8/1) and hits NYC on Monday (8/5) at Citi Field. All remaining dates are listed below.
