Newport Folk Festival 2024 day 2: War on Drugs, Killer Mike, Orville Peck, Billy Bragg, more (pics, video)
After kicking off on Friday, the 2024 edition of Newport Folk Festival continued on Saturday (7/27) at Fort Adams State Park. Gillian Welch and David Rawlings closed out the night, and it was another guest appearance-filled day: Orville Peck brought out Nathaniel Rateliff for their duet “Conquer the Heart” (he also told the crowd the three rules of his shows were to sing along, dance, and cry if you felt the need to). The War on Drugs had The Hold Steady‘s Craig Finn join them for a rendition of John Hiatt’s “Walk On” (which they previously covered together in Philadelphia in 2022). Rhiannon Giddens was joined by Taj Mahal and Joan Baez (Joan also discussed her poetry book, When You See My Mother, Ask Her to Dance, with Carmel Holt for the “SHEROES” podcast earlier in the day, and read a few poems ahead of Welch and Rawlings’ set, introducing them). Saturday at Newport Folk also featured Killer Mike, The Hanseroth Twins, Katie Gavin (playing songs from her new solo album the day after her set with MUNA), Hermanos Gutiérrez, Billy Bragg, Reyna Tropical, Linqua Franqa, Number One Babe, Palmyra, and more. See pictures by Ellen Qbertplaya and a few attendee-taken video clips below. Check out our coverage of Friday HERE.
