Jessica Pratt played two Bowery Ballroom shows (night 2 pics, video, setlist w/ @)
Jessica Pratt released one of our favorite albums of 2024 so far, Here In The Pitch, in May, and she’s nearing the end of the summer leg of her tour supporting it, which stopped in NYC last week for a pair of sold out shows at Bowery Ballroom on Wednesday and Thursday (7/24 and 7/25). We went on night two, which started with an opening set from @ (June McDoom opened night one). Explaining it in an Instagram story, they called it a “5 person setup with drums, bass, acoustic & electric guitar, cello, flute, melodica and a bunch of vocal harmonies. The set is about half mind palace music stuff, a track from the EP reimagined in a shreddy prog way, and 3-4 new unreleased songs that’ll be on the next album.” They told the Bowery Ballroom crowd that it was the biggest room they’d played yet, and emphasized that they really wanted it to sound good. It sounded fantastic, with sublime vocal harmonies mingling with gently ornamented folk. All chatter in the house died away as Jessica, taking a seat between a music stand and a table, took to the now dimly-lit stage for her set. This is her first full-band tour, and she was joined by Matt McDermott, Riley Fleck, Nico Leibman and Suzanne Kraft, who provided subtle but beautiful accompaniment, especially on the Here in the Pitch material, which has fuller arrangements than her last few albums of bare-bones folk. The new songs made up most of the set (she played everything on the album except “Nowhere It Was” and “Glances”), and and she also included a few songs from 2019’s Quiet Signs and two from 2015’s On Your Own Love Again, including the title track, which ended the night. Before the encore, she brought out Ryley Walker (who also appears on Here in the Pitch) for “Life Is.” It was an exceedingly lovely set that was over too soon, and you can see pictures, attendee-taken video, and the setlist below. Jessica will be back in the NYC area during her fall tour, for a Jersey City show at White Eagle Hall on September 21 with Otto Benson. We talked to Jessica for the cover story of the third issue of our digital magazine. Read it for free HERE.
