After kicking off on Saturday, All Things Go continued its inaugural NYC edition on Sunday (9/29) at Forest Hills Stadium. It was another rainy day, but the weather finally cleared in time for Janelle Monae‘s headlining set, a slightly abbreviated version of her high energy, highly choreographed, good vibes Age of Pleasure tour. On before her was Ethel Cain, who said it was her last show of the year, and was mesmerizing as she played songs from her great 2022 album Preacher’s Daughter, a cover of “Bette Davis Eyes,” which she called “the best 80’s pop song ever,” and a new song that she’s been playing live this year, “Punish,” that she said would be out “faster than you can say All Things Go.”
Julien Baker was celebrating her birthday, and while there was no onstage cake (that happened backstage with her boygenius bandmates), she did have her band along with her to play new arrangements of her old solo songs, which sounded huger than ever, especially with her ripping on guitar. She’ll continue her multi-city fall residency later this week at Webster Hall in NYC.
