The 2024 Tony Awards nominations were announced today, and this might be the most indie-alternative adjacent they’ve ever been.
Stereophonic, the play about a Fleetwood Mac-esque band in the ’70s featuring songs and score by Will Butler (formerly of Arcade Fire), was nominated for 13 Tonys, including Best Play and Best Original Score (Music And/Or Lyrics) Written For The Theatre.
Also nominated for 13 Tonys, tying with Stereophonic for the most this year, is Alicia Keys‘ semi-autobiographical musical Hell’s Kitchen, which is up for Best Musical, Best Choreography, Best Orchestration, and more.
Here Lies Love, the Imelda Marcos musical by David Byrne and Fatboy Slim, received four nominations: Best Original Score (Music And/Or Lyrics) Written For Theatre, Best Scenic Design, Best Sound Design, and Best Choreography.
Illinoise, the musical based on Sufjan Stevens’ album of the same name, also received four nomination: Best Musical, Best Lighting Design, Best Choreography, and Best Orchestrations.
Other 2024 Tony nominees include The Who’s Tommy and The Wiz, which were both nominated for Best Revival of a Musical.
The 2024 Tonys will be given out Sunday, June 16 at Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater, and will be broadcast live on CBS and Paramount Plus at 8 PM Eastern. Ariana DeBose will host for the third year in a row.
