Tricky has announced a new album, Different When It’s Silent, which will be out July 17 via his own False Idols label. The album was recorded between his current home in France and sessions in his hometown of Bristol, and features his current main collaborator, Marta Złakowska. This is his 15th studio album and first under the Tricky name in six years. “I just love making music,” he says. “I’m grateful I’ve had the chance to live this life and keep creating.”
These songs were originally intended to be another of his sid project releases, like 2021’s Lonely Guest or the 2025 album he produced for current vocal collaborator Marta, but his new manager Alan McGee (who founded Creation Records), convinced him otherwise. “He goes, ‘Mate, this is a Tricky album. This is the best thing since Maxinquaye. This has got to be a Tricky album.'”
Different When It’s Silent features contributions from Marta, Bristolian singer-songwriter Mitch Sanders, and Bristol rapper Red Run Rambo who appeared on his 2024 Theis Thaws album.
The first single from the album is “Out of Place,” which is a propulsive, borderline rock song with Tricky and Marta trading lines. McGee was right, this is a good one. Watch the music video below.
