17 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.

PULP – “OPEN STRINGS”

This curio instrumental was the b-side to Pulp’s comeback single, “Spike Island,” and was previously just available on vinyl.

SHOW ME THE BODY – “DANCE IN THE USA”

Show Me The Body have been teasing a new album, and while they haven’t announced one, they have shared a new song, “Dance in the USA.” Lead vocalist Julian Cashwan Pratt says it’s “about how we implore style to survive in this reality. It’s how we embrace the struggle of ourselves, our family’s, and those around you. It’s the dance that we all do – how we hustle, the good and the bad things we do – just to get through it.”

MARY IN THE JUNKYARD – “CANDELABRA”

Here’s another song off London band mary in the junkyard’s upcoming debut album. “‘Candelabra’ was written many years ago, it was one of my first sad songs,” says Clari-Freeman Taylor. “It has all of my teenage angst written into it.”

EMILY A. SPRAGUE – “DOUBLE MOON”

Emily Sprague of Florist says her new single “Double Moon” “marks the beginning exploration of a previously uncharted map for me – the realms that combine my modular synthesizer work and my singing/songwriting.” It’s part of an EP, Double Moon due out on May 28 via RVNG Intl.

RARE DM – “HONEY”

Rare DM’s new album Attention is out next month, and she’s given us another preview with “Honey.” “‘Honey’ is my first happy love song,” she says. “I wrote it during the uncertain time before saying the words ‘I love you’ – you’re in a constant state of butterflies: it’s sweet, vulnerable and a little scary. I wrote it in my old studio in Bushwick when I was being swept up, and really got into the symphony of things, percussive polyrhythms; chopping up my vocals. ‘Honey’ is one of the first songs I finished with producer Ross Fish aka Moffenzeef Modular (also from 4MS). I’m thrilled with how it turned out – super wide and swirly. I really enjoyed dialing in the finishing touches together. It’s one of my favorite songs to perform live. ‘Honey’ the video is leaning into the best part of being in love: having fun and being silly. Dating is a lot of sifting through trash, looking in the wrong places, getting caught up in games, battling decision paralysis… there are so many fish in the sea, you have to be willing to make a fool of yourself to find the right one. I am a strong believer that the most important part of a relationship is making each other laugh. The world is too serious.”

BALMORA – “INHERITANCE & SOLITUDE”

“‘Inheritance & Solitude’ is about the acceptance of suffering and eventual demise,” Balmora guitarist Jay Torblaa says of the latest single off their debut album, These Graven Halls. “No matter where you are in life, there is always suffering, and there’s always death.”

FRIKO – “SOMETHING WORTH WAITING FOR”

Friko’s new album Something Worth Waiting For is out this Friday, and ahead of that they’ve shared the title track. “Referencing lyrics from our first record, ‘Something Worth Waiting For’ became the band’s mission statement for our second LP,” vocalist and guitarist Niko Kapetan says. “Later taking on the album name as well, this song pedals, drives, runs, bolts, and barrels forward without ever looking back over its shoulder. Ending with the only big distorted guitar build on the record, just like its title, it never quite reaches that climax. Leaning into the idea that the pace is everlasting, and the destination just seconds away, always.”

MUI ZYU – “パラレリズム (PARALLELISME)” (MIHARU KOSHI COVER)

“I was blown away when I first heard this album because of its perfect mix of sweet melodies alongside otherworldly textures.. presented in this kinda super slick pop way.,” mui zyu says of her new Miharu Koshi cover. “I was studying Japanese at the time and thought the title track would be a special song to record. The process of diving into the original production to rearrange the parts was so educational too and only made me love the song more. I haven’t been able to find much information about the record online, or in stores, but I managed to find it on vinyl when we toured in Japan a year ago, it was like finding a precious treasure.”

FRUIT BATS – “THINK ABOUTCHA”

“‘Think Aboutcha’ is a song about a preoccupation that has made its way into many of my lyrics: the liminal space in a dream where memories and love and heartache blur into a psychedelic haze,” says Fruit Bats’ Eric D Johnson. “It was recorded live at Bear Creek Studios on a rainy spring day in Washington State. It pretty much sounds like how we sounded playing in that beautiful barn that day, save for a few tiny overdubs and mix magic.” New album The Landfill is out June 12 via Merge.

BASEMENT – “HEAD ALIGHT”

“What started out as a love song quickly evolved into something a lot more ethereal,” Basement vocalist Andrew Fisher says of “Head Alight,” the new single from their first album in over eight years, Wired. “Alex was picking up on what I was saying in a far broader and otherworldly way. He saw it less in a romantic way – a more universal look at the idea of someone’s soul or essence being so powerful and beautiful you can’t look away. This really excited me because it allowed me to get out of my head and focus on something way more abstract and therefore, hopefully more expansive. I hadn’t really approached songwriting like this before and I found it really fulfilling. We were really stuck with this sound – focusing on the guitar leading it, in a very indie rock early 2000s thing. It just never felt right. The more we added, the less I liked it. John stripped everything back and it became so much more powerful.”

SWAPMEET – “SAND”

Australian band Swapmeet have announced their debut LP, Mount Zero, due out July 17 via Winspear, and shared a new single, “Sand.” The Band’s Jack Medlyn says it’s “about wasting your own time, then being so, so mad at yourself. And a little bit mad at the people who make apps and phones so addictive.”
