If you’re into the whole hardcore/alt-rock crossover thing going on right now with bands like Militarie Gun, Drug Church, Scowl, Turnstile, etc, you need to make sure St. Louis’ Squint are on your radar. They put out two great EPs in 2022, and now they’ve announced their debut album, Big Hand, due October 25 via Sunday Drive (pre-order). The album was produced by Jon Markson, who’s become a go-to guy for this kind of stuff (he’s also worked with Drug Church, One Step Closer, Koyo, and tons more), and it includes recent single “Magic” plus two new songs that just came out today, “Pack Rat” and “Sunshine.”
The new material is some of Squint’s best yet. The especially Drug Church-y “Pack Rat” finds Squint fusing Big Riffs with a gritty, hardcore-informed bark from vocalist Brennen Wilkinson, while “Sunshine” is one of the band’s catchiest songs yet, a soaring anthem that sounds like something you might’ve heard on rock radio in the ’90s. About the album title, the album bio says, “Big Hand—in reference to the constant moving of time on a clock—can gather a sense of anxiety, excitement, hope and hopelessness. In a more literal sense, a big hand can pack a punch, swell, break and recover.”
Squint are also going on a Europe/UK tour with Feverchild in September and the poster for that with all dates is below.
