This Tuesday (8/20), Jawbox drummer Zach Barocas will release two new pieces with his chamber music group Zach Barocas New Freedom Sound. Titled Two Freedoms, it features the 12-minute “Fourteenth Freedom” and the 15-minute “Twelfth Freedom,” and Zach says these pieces “form a sort of trilogy” with last year’s Second Freedom: Every God Needs a Witness, “at least insofar as they were composed in part simultaneously and derive mostly from the same sessions.” His band features Jawbox leader J. Robbins on piano, Jawbox affiliate Gordon Withers on cello, fellow DC/Dischord vet Mark Cisneros (The Make-Up, Kid Congo and the Pink Monkey Birds, Hammered Hulls, etc) on various woodwinds, and more.
“They mark an exploration into more orchestral textures, perhaps, longer durations, and expanded voices, all the while hewing close to the kind of ecstatic, joyful, jazz-inflected, and percussive performances one might recall from the previously released works in the Freedoms series,” Zach continues. Two Freedoms will be streaming everywhere and available on 12″ vinyl via The Cultural Society/Sweet Cheetah Records starting at midnight, but meanwhile, both pieces get an early premiere right here.
