Silver Patron Saints: The Songs of Jesse Malin, a covers compilation that will benefit Jesse Malin‘s medical care, is out in September, and they’ve shared another track off of it. Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day, a longtime friend and collaborator of Jesse’s, took on his Glitter in the Gutter track “Black Haired Girl,” which you can hear bellow.
“Jesse is a dear friend to me,” Armstrong says. “I love his songwriting. He is all heart…His passion is endless. We send each other YouTube videos (mostly old Ramones clips and New York Dolls). Every time I’m in New York he goes out of his way to make me, my friends and my family feel at home. He’s always down for a laugh or a shoulder to cry on. Jesse, we love you and we’d do anything for you.”
Malin adds, “When I heard Billie Joe was doing ‘Black Haired Girl’ I was so blown away. Billie took it to another level, a lot of attitude, a lot of power, a lot of style, like everything that he does.”
Silver Patron Saints is out on September 20 via Glassnote, and it’s available for pre-order now. Proceeds will go to Malin’s Sweet Relief artist fund to help fund his treatment after suffering a spinal-cord stroke that left him paralyzed from the waist down. It also features contributions from Bruce Springsteen, Lucinda Williams and Elvis Costello, The Hold Steady, Tommy Stinson, Alison Mosshart with the late Wayne Kramer, Tom Morello, Counting Crows, Dinosaur Jr., The Wallflowers, Spoon, Susanna Hoffs, Frank Turner, and Rancid.
Malin will also make his return to the stage for a pair of Beacon Theatre shows on December 1 and 2. He’ll be joined by his band and a star-studded assortment of special guests, including Lucinda Williams, Rickie Lee Jones, Jakob Dylan, Butch Walker, J Mascis, Adam Duritz and David Immy of Counting Crows, Alejandro Escovedo, and hosts Michael Imperioli and Mary-Louise Parker on night one, and Lucinda Williams, The Hold Steady, J Mascis, Adam Durtiz and David Immy of Counting Crows, Butch Walker, Willie Nile, Tommy Stinson, and Adam Weiner of Low Cut Connie on night two, with more to be announced.
Green Day, meanwhile, are about to begin their stadium tour with Smashing Pumpkins, Rancid, and The Linda Lindas, and they’ve shared a new video for Saviors track “Corvette Summer,” where they appear with actor Mark Hamill and comedian Hannibal Buress. “Rev up those engines, the ‘Corvette Summer’ music video is here and it’s one wild ride!!” Green Day say. “The song was named after one of our favourite cult classic movies [1978’s Corvette Summer], so it only made sense to pay homage to it with the music video. “We even took things one step further and got Mark Hamill – who starred in the original [as Kenneth W. Dantley Jr.] – to star in our remake alongside us, Hannibal Buress, and some others. We blew the entire budget on them, so we had to get creative with cardboard boxes, some duct tape and matchbox cars we found in Tre’s basement.
