Clairo, Margo Price, Empress Of, TOPS, Frankie Cosmos, Bedouine, Barrie and more have contributed to new tribute compilation Like Someone I Know: A Celebration of Margo Guryan, which will be out November 8 via Sub Pop. Preorders are available now and a portion of proceeds from this album will be donated to providing and advocating for affordable reproductive health services.
Margo Guryan, who died in 2021, had her songs recorded by Harry Nilsson, Claudine Longet, Glen Campbell, Bobbie Gentry and more. Spanky & Our Gang had a 1968 hit with their version of “Sunday Mornin'” This compilation is an homage to Margo’s wonderful 1968 debut (and only) album, Take a Picture, which has become a cult classic over the last five decades.
Sub Pop has shared Empress Of’s take on “Someone I Know,” which is very different from Margo’s original, though both incorporates Bach’s “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring.” You can watch the video, which was directed by Sabrina Nichols (The Smile, Loma, youbet) and looks kinda like a lost Schoolhouse Rocks short.
