Covering Napalm Death‘s 1.316-second-long “You Suffer” is a time-tested tradition. According to Setlist.fm, 82 artists have covered it, including NOFX (in the early ’90s), Opeth (as recently as this year), and Full of Hell. In 2007, Kylie Minoise released an hour-long noise interpretation of the track. In recent years, there have been acoustic covers and jazz covers. They are always amusing.
One of the many bands that covered “You Suffer” in recent memory was Low, who played it at Primavera Sound 2022, one of the band’s last-ever shows before Mimi Parker sadly passed away later that year. (They also did it in 2020 during one of their COVID-era Instagram sessions, but I’m pretty sure Primavera was the first and only time they played it for a live audience.) Low helped pioneer the slowcore genre, but they didn’t slow “You Suffer” down one bit. They did it in Napalm Death’s original grindcore style, and it probably comes as no surprise that it was very cool (and, again, very amusing) to see. Low’s Alan Sparhawk has been busy this year with his solo career. He released White Roses, My God on Sub Pop in September and he just announced more tour dates this week, including a show at Brooklyn’s Elsewhere Hall on April 2.
Napalm Death will be on the road in 2025 too, with their co-headlining tour with the Melvins.
