OKC noise rockers Chat Pile have announced that they’ll follow their 2022 breakthrough debut album God’s Country with their second proper album, Cool World, on October 11 via The Flenser (pre-order). It was mixed by Uniform’s Ben Greenberg, marking the first time the band worked with an outside mixer. “Cool World covers similar themes to our last album, except now exploded from a micro to macro scale, with thoughts specifically about disasters abroad, at home, and how they affect one another,” says vocalist Raygun Busch. “If I had to describe the album in one sentence, it’s hard not to borrow from Voltaire, so I won’t resist – Cool World is about the price at which we eat sugar in America.”
“While we wanted our follow-up to God’s Country to still capture the immediate, uncompromising essence of Chat Pile, we also knew that with Cool World, we’d want to stretch the definition of our ‘sound’ to reflect our tastes beyond just noise rock territory,” adds bassist Stin. “Now that we had some form of creative comfort zones in place after hitting that milestone of putting out a full-length record, album #2 felt like the perfect opportunity to challenge those limits.”
The first single is “I Am Dog Now,” a chunky, grating, post-hardcore/noise rock anthem that picks right up where God’s Country left off. If you’re excited about The Jesus Lizard’s comeback and you haven’t hopped aboard the Chat Pile train yet, change that now.
Of the Will Mecca-directed video, Stin says, “Will’s vision captures the essence of ‘I Am Dog Now’ by channeling his specific style of low-fi, exploitation cinema aesthetic into a dusty, religious bad-trip exclusive to the southern plains of America. Eagle eyed viewers may actually notice shots of the literal chat piles from which we take our name.” Check it out below.
Fresh off playing Sound and Fury, Chat Pile have also announced a headlining fall tour with support from their Flenser labelmates Agriculture and Mamaleek, plus Chat Pile’s OKC hometown heroes Traindodge, Nashville punks Thirdface, and Austin’s Portrayal of Guilt Records-signed Porcelain, varying by date. Tickets go on sale Friday (7/19) at 10 AM.
NYC gets a stop on November 16 at Le Poisson Rouge, and that one is with Mamaleek and Traindodge. All dates are listed below.
