Boundary-pushing Albany emo/indie/punk band Prince Daddy & the Hyena return with a self-titled album, their third overall and first for Pure Noise. Recorded by past collaborator Nick “Scoops” Dardaris, the album is the band’s first since vocalist Kory Gregory’s severe 2018 van accident, and it finds Kory grappling with the fear of death over some of the band’s best-sounding and most ambitious music to date. “I think the record as a whole, as a journey, feels bittersweet and hopeful in a way,” he said. “In other words: we’re all going to die, so we might as well enjoy the ride before we do.”
Like its acclaimed predecessor ‘Cosmic Thrill Seekers,’ the new album is a concept album, and one of its main characters is The Collector, which Kory calls “depression or death in corporeal form,” and which is represented by the photo of Kory’s cousin that appears on the album artwork. “To me, that photo is the essence of the record,” Kory says. “When people hear me singing about the character on the record that isn’t me, I want them to picture that.”
