Description
Uniting the forward-thinking sonics of 1980s college rock with the flamboyant bombast of 1970s hard-rock, Jane’s Addiction certainly succeeded in defying their debut album’s titular statement. Nothing’s Shocking helped set the precedent for the genre-mashing alt-rock movement that took off in the ‘90s, heaping together elements of Cure-esque goth, scorching proto-grunge, funky rhythms, dub-like instrumental passages, finger-flying guitar solos, and Perry Farrell’s distinctive wail. Most impressively, the amalgamated approach yielded gigantic anthems that were as singable as they were musically puzzling. In other words, it rocks.
