UK band English Teacher share new single “The World’s Biggest Paving Slab”

UK band English Teacher got their start in 2020, maybe not the most ideal time to form a band, at Leeds Conservatoire with a sound that mixes post-punk, dream-pop and the wry, slightly skewed worldview of songwriter Lily Fontaine. They released a couple singles for indie label Nice Swan Records before getting noticed by producer Dan Carey, who released “Song About Love” on his Speedy Wunderground label earlier this year.

The band have now signed with Island Records and have released their first single for the label. If “The World’s Biggest Paving Slab” is your introduction to band, one of the first things you notice is Fontaine’s voice, which is smooth and luxurious and contrasts nicely from from the more angular guitar elements of English Teacher. But don’t let her sonorous pipes fool you, Lily means business: “I am the world’s biggest paving slab / So watch your fucking feet.”

You can watch the video and check out “Song About Love” below.

English Teacher will head out on a UK tour next week, and those dates are listed below.
