The Tubs, the band led by former Joanna Gruesome member Owen ‘O’ Williams, will release their second full length, Cotton Crown, on March 7 via Trouble in Mind.
Never one to shy away from personal topics, Owen on the new album writes about the 2014 suicide of his mother, folk singer and writer Charlotte Greig. The album’s artwork features a photo of him being breastfed by Grieg, which was actually the press picture for her 1998 debut album.
The single from the album is “Freak Mode,” an immediately likeable indie rock earworm that is “about dating while grieving the death of my mother,” says Williams. “It’s about making wacky tragicomic romantic assumptions and being an emotional freak, but also kind of being self aware about that and explaining it to whoever you’re shagging.” Watch the video below.
