Tom Skinner of The Smile and Sons of Kemet has announced his second solo album, Kaleidoscopic Visions, which will be out September 26 via Brownswood Recordings and International Anthem. He produced the record himself and it features contributions from Meshell Ndegeocello, Portishead‘s Adrian Utley, Contour, Smile collaborator Robert Stillman, Yaffra, and more.
The first single from the album is the title track. “‘Kaleidoscopic Visions’ was the first piece I wrote for the album,” Tom says. “Based around an intuitive piano improvisation, it set the tone for my approach and the sound I wanted to achieve in the creative process. Showcasing the conversational and collaborative dynamic of the music and my band, it foregrounds a moody, cinematic flow within a hazy, psychedelic backdrop.” Listen below.
Tom will play a trio of US shows this fall: Chicago’s Thalia Hall on October 1 with Makaya McCraven, Brooklyn’s Public Records on October 6, and Philadelphia’s Solar Myth on October 7. He’ll also play the EFG London Jazz Festival in November. Dates are listed below.
