Belgian-Egyptian musician Tamino (the grandson of Egyptian singer and actor Muharram Fouad) has announced a new album, Every Dawn’s a Mountain, due out on March 21 via Djinn/Communion. He wrote most of it in NYC, where he recently moved, and he produced it with regular collaborator PJ Maertens, with co-production from Eric Heigle and Alessandro Buccellati, and additional production by Chris Messina, Zach Hanson, and Jo Francken. Mitski, who he toured with this year, features on a track, “Sanctuary,” and you can see the cover art and tracklist below.
“Just as fire can erupt with great force, most of these songs seemed to burst their way into existence,” Tamino says. “Unabashedly and without warning, they demanded my attention and determined the course of my days. They say the faster the flame burns, the harder it is to catch. Similarly, capturing the right feel while recording proved challenging at times. I’ve never really approached music conceptually. Usually, songwriting feels more like carving away into a self-revealing sculpture rather than carefully implementing a pre-existing blueprint. After recent developments in my life, however, I did feel a tremendous urge to build a metaphysical altar for what had been lost. The end result, though at times eclectic, feels like the most harmonious record I’ve made to date, with all 10 songs strung together by a same sense of honoring and letting go.”
The first single is the haunting “Babylon,” which Tamino calls a cornerstone of the album. Hear it below.
Tamino will go on a North American tour this spring, starting in San Diego on March 27 and wrapping up on April 17 in Washington DC, and including an NYC show at Brooklyn Steel on April 13. Tickets to that and all dates go on sale Friday, October 18 at 10 AM local, with various presales starting Wednesday, October 16 at 10 AM local. See all dates below.
