Drop Nineteens, who released their first album since the ’90s last year, have unearthed a lost album they’ve titled 1991, which will be released February 7 via Wharf Cat. The album is made up of demos that were sent out to labels with hopes of getting signed. When they eventually signed to Caroline/Hut they decided to write all new material, which would make up their debut album, Delaware.
“These songs were written and recorded in 1991 on an 8-track reel to reel largely in our dorm rooms,” says the band’s Greg Ackell. “We called them demos at the time, but now they’re just unreleased Drop Nineteens songs that never benefited from the fidelity of a recording studio. We remastered them, some 33 years later for this release, but they still evoke our infancy as a band.” He continues, “After signing to Caroline Records, I suggested to the band we not re-record any of the demos for our debut. It was nothing against the songs. But we were overly confident the way 19-20 year olds typically are, and wanted to challenge ourselves with writing an album from scratch in a short period of time, largely in the studio. That became Delaware.”
You can listen to “Daymom,” which is on the ethereal/Slowdive side of the shoegaze equation, below.
In other news, Drop Nineteens have also released a new official video for “Kick the Tragedy” from Delaware which has become their most popular song on streaming services by a longshot. Hundreds of fan submissions were used to create this new video and you can watch that below.
