NYC band Starcleaner Reunion have announced their debut album, Umbrella, which will be out September 25 via Take Care. The band produced it themselves and it was mixed by Model/Actriz’s Reuben Radlauer and mastered by Hebra Kadry.
The album includes “Weather Instrument,” which came out in May, and the new single is the alluring “Never Odd or Even.” It’s hard for someone like myself to talk about Starcleaner Reunion and not reference Stereolab, who are clearly a big influence on this song. They do this kind of loungey tropicalia/psych very well, though, and “Never Odd or Even” is rip with hooks and melody.
“‘Never Odd or Even’ is about the anticipation of sharing secrets,” says singer Jo Roman. “Some of them can be entertaining while others could reveal dark things. This song explores the experience of a personal secret leaving that protective space in someone’s mind. The push and pull dynamic of the music, bouncing between propulsive motorik rush and 5/4 waltz, mimics that trajectory between that excitement and unimaginable darkness.” Watch the video below.
Starcleaner Reunion will be on tour this fall, including West Coast dates supporting Blondshell. Before that they’ll play the 2026 edition of NYC’s free Emerging Music Festival on Saturday, August 22 in Bryant Park with Heathers, Magi Merlin, and Lowertown also on the bill.
