Spirit of the Beehive have announced a new album, You’ll Have To Lose Something, their first full-length since 2021’s great Entertainment, Death (and also following 2023’s I’m So Lucky EP), due August 23 via Saddle Creek (pre-order). I’m So Lucky primarily dealt with the end of band members Zack Schwartz and Rivka Ravede’ decade-plus-long romantic relationship, and a press release calls this new album “a continued meditation on the end of relationships and the unsteadiness that follows.”
The first single is “Let the Virgin Drive,” which Zack says is “about unrequited love and making up a situation or whole life in your head. The other person finally ‘sees you’ and your ‘problems are solved,’ but they aren’t, really.” In classic Spirit of the Beehive fashion, it’s a disorienting song with everything from earthy acoustic guitars to robotic auto-tune vocals to an eerie ambient bridge and all kinds of other weird stuff in between, and it comes with a video that’s equally unsettling. Director Daniel Patrick Brennan calls it “a video about trying to cure your loneliness through material means, courage, impulsivity, and chopping your finger off after cutting an avocado.” The whole thing is as strangely alluring as Spirit have ever been. The band have also announced a tour beginning in September, featuring one leg with Winter and one with Kassie Krut. Tickets go on sale Friday (6/14) at 10 AM local.
