After bringing it to Brooklyn last year, Solange has curated another edition of her Eldorado Ballroom series for Saint Heron, named after the historic venue in Houston’s Third Ward. It happens at Los Angeles’ Walt Disney Concert Hall on October 10, 12, and 13, and tickets are on sale now.
Night one on 10/10, “On Dissonance (An Evening of Classical, Symphonic, and Opera Works)” features the US premiere of Solange’s piece “Not Necessarily in Arms Reach,” Patrice Rushen‘s Sinfonia, and Julia Perry‘s Short Piece for Orchestra and Homunculus C.F., performed by the LA Phil with conductor Jeri Lynne Johnson and vocalist Zoie Reams. Solange notes:
-My music for Two Tubas “Not Necessarily In Arms Reach” will make its US debut.
It is short (3 minutes) but sweet, & I hold it near to my heart✨
-Patrice Rushen’s “SINFONIA”, her first composition written for an orchestra in 1999 will also be performed 🙏🏾
-Julia Perry’s Homunculus C.F., scored for harp, celesta/piano, and eight additional percussionists will also be performed.
I gagged when i heard this piece because the streets will try and make you think that classical minimalism was birthed by white men in 1964, and Julia composed this in 1960, sooo ??
Night two on 10/12, “Contrapuntal Counterpoints (Experiments in Funk, Soul, and Jazz),” will feature performances from Bilal featuring multi-instrumentalist Cooper-Moore, bassist William Parker, and drummer Michael Wimberly, along with J*Davey and Liv.e. Solange says, “J* Davey is reuniting 🙂↔️ Liv.e is so ill! annnddd seeing/hearing Bilal with Cooper Moore, William Parker and Michael Wimberly as a band is about to be pretty weird (in the best way) and improv at its finest.”
Night three on 10/13, “Glory to Glory (A Revival for Spiritual and Devotional Art),” features performances from The GMWA Women of Worship Choir, organist Dominique Johnson featuring Moses Sumney, and the choral and piano works of Mary Lou Williams performed by Artina McCain and a choir conducted by Malcolm J. Obvsss a Gospel legendaric classic, but Glenn Edward Burleigh composed it in HOUSTON, & had a history of incorporating classical & opera idioms w Black American blues & jazz.
This song is the embodiment of what I am trying to achieve with “Glory To Glory”.
There are so many conventions of praise represented on this night. I can’t wait!
