Patti Smith‘s iconic, influential, game-changing 1975 debut album Horses turns 50 this year, and Patti will celebrate by performing the album in full on a tour of the US, the UK, and Europe. Her band will include guitarist Lenny Kaye and drummer Jay Dee Daugherty, both of whom play on the original album. The tour includes stops in NYC, LA, Chicago, Boston, DC, Philly, San Francisco, Seattle, Oakland, London, Paris, and more. Tickets go on presale Wednesday (2/12) and the general public on-sale starts Friday (2/14).
The NYC stop is a two-night stand at Beacon Theatre, on November 21 and 22. All dates are listed below.
Horses probably needs no introduction, but just in case, its mix of primitive rock & roll, avant-garde tendencies, and poetry made it a foundational album in the development of punk rock, bridging the gap between fellow New Yorkers the Velvet Underground (whose John Cale produced the LP), and the soon-to-come debut albums from bands like the Ramones, Television, Talking Heads, and Blondie. It’s also influenced a countless amount of other indie and alternative rock artists since then, many of whom will celebrate Patti at this year’s “The Music Of…” benefit concert at Carnegie Hall on March 26, including Michael Stipe, Kim Gordon & Bill Nace, The National‘s Matt Berninger, Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Karen O, Sharon Van Etten, Courtney Barnett, Angel Olsen, The Kills’ Alison Mosshart, and more.
The tour announcement follows Patti recently collapsing on stage in Brazil, an incident she said was “grossly exaggerated” by “the press and social media,” assuring everyone that she is fine. A few days ago, she also shared a message in support of Palestine: “Palestine belongs to Palestinians.”
