Originally around from 1997-2001, Panchiko had a surprise rise in popularity about two decades later when their obscure 2000 debut EP D>E>A>T>H>M>E>T>A>L went viral after being uploaded to the internet by a 4chan user who found a copy of it in a charity shop, and the surprise interest led to the band reissuing D>E>A>T>H>M>E>T>A>L and releasing the Ferric Oxide (Demos 1997–2001) comp in 2020, returning to the stage in 2021 for the first time over 20 years, and releasing their first-ever full-length album Failed at Math(s). Now the band is a genuine sensation who have over a million monthly Spotify listeners and consistently play shows to people who weren’t born yet when Panchiko first broke up, and they’ve just announced another new album, Ginkgo.
It comes out April 4 via Nettwerk (pre-order), and the title track is out now. Though Panchiko have been called “shoegaze” and their rise has certainly been assisted by the shoegaze resurgence, they were never really a shoegaze band and this song is no exception. It’s a dose of dreamy art rock that kinda sounds like the more ethereal, trippy side of Radiohead, and it’s something that Panchiko do very well. Listen and watch the video (by Simon Ellis) below.
