Phil Elverum has announced a new Mount Eerie album, Night Palace, due November 1 via his own P.W. Elverum & Sun label (pre-order). It’s the first Mount Eerie release since the 2019 Mount Eerie & Julie Doiron album Lost Wisdom pt. 2, the first non-collaborative Mount Eerie album since 2018’s Now Only, and Phil Elverum’s first album since The Microphones‘ 2020 album Microphones In 2020.
The album has 26 songs, and a press release says, “This is a return to the beloved deep analog fuzz world of the Microphones’ the Glow pt. 2 (2001) and the many thickly embroidered Mount Eerie universes that have followed. Smashed tape, breathing air organs, crackling tube amps and a welcome living reality just outside the open window all entwine to push the definition of what’s ‘home’ and what’s ‘studio’, of what’s a ‘song’ and what’s at the heart of the unmediated idea itself.” The vinyl release is a double LP that comes “wrapped in a gigantic poster (62″x43″) packed with imagery and fully annotated lyrics.”
Two new songs are out along with the announcement, “Broom of Wind” and “I Walk,” and there’s a video for the former by Indigo Free. You can definitely hear the raw, intimate, Glow pt. 2 vibes coming through on these songs, and they’re both great. Check them out below.
Mont Eerie also announced two shows for this fall: Brooklyn’s Warsaw on November 19 and LA’s Bellwether on November 21. Tickets for both shows go on sale Friday (9/6) at 10 AM local time.
