English trio ME REX have announced what they’re calling their debut album, following several EPs and their unique 2021 project Megabear. The new album, Giant Elk, is coming on October 20 via Big Scary Monsters (pre-order). Giant Elk tracks a story of “continual fracturing and regeneration, illustrating the process of growing through loss and grief, set against the backdrop of societal and climate collapse,” per ME REX. Check out the album artwork and tracklist below.
The lead single off Giant Elk is “Eutherians (Ultramarine),” of which band leader Myles McCabe explains says: “Eutherians is a clade of mammals that includes humans. The word can be translated contrastingly as either ‘true beasts’ or ‘good beasts.’ The lyrics follow the album’s central metaphor of a creature cursed to continue life split in half, grieving the violent separation from itself, while trying to become whole and finding some meaning in that striving. The Ultramarine referred to in the song represents alternately the infinite, domineering sky and the chaos and danger of the sea.” Listen to “Eutherians (Ultramarine)” below.
ME REX will tour the UK through the month of November. All dates below.
