Joyce Manor have announced their seventh album, I Used To Go To This Bar, due January 30, 2026 via Epitaph. We’ve got an exclusive “frosted orange” vinyl variant, and that’s limited to 300 copies and available to pre-order in the BV shop now. Check out a mock-up below.
After making records with Rob Schnapf, Kurt Ballou, Joe Reinhart, Jack Shirley, and Alex Estrada, this new album was produced by Epitaph Records founder and Bad Religion guitarist Brett Gurewitz, who’s produced classic Epitaph releases by Rancid, NOFX, Pennywise, L7, his own band, and more. Brett signed on to produce the album after first producing its recently-released first single “All My Friends Are So Depressed,” as he explains: “I’ve been extremely proud of Joyce Manor since we signed them, and [singer/guitarist] Barry [Johnson] and I have always had an excellent working relationship together. I loved the song, but I could hear it done in a totally different way. He said, ‘Well, would you ever consider producing a single for us?’ And I was like, ‘Dude, I would love to.’”
“Working with Brett was amazing,” says Barry. “When it comes to our musical DNA, he’s one of the architects of everything we grew up on. Having him guide our record helped us make something that we could put next to those classic records that shaped us. I really feel like we were behind the wheel, and I’m really proud of it.” Guitarist Chase Knobbe adds, “He likes to keep the excitement up, and he’s amazing at coaching performances and knowing what not to sweat. Brett legitimized all our early influences in a way that gave us a lot of confidence to execute what we were going for.”
The album was mixed by Tony Hoffer, who also mixed Never Hungover Again, and there’s contributions on several songs from mix engineer Tom Lord-Alge, who worked on Barry’s beloved Enema of the State. Having gone through a handful of different drummers over the years, they made this album with three different drummers: their current touring drummer Jared Shavelson (Paint It Black, The Hope Conspiracy), Social Distortion’s David Hidalgo Jr., and Joey Waronker (Thom Yorke, Beck, Roger Waters, Oasis). “Over the last 16 years, it’s very much felt like the three of us have this chemistry of playing music together,” says bassist/backing vocalist Matt Ebert, “and we have this pattern of drummers not staying around for too long. It made sense to forge forward as the three of us and figure out the drummer situation as we go.”
While the jangly “All My Friends Are So Depressed” pulled influence from The Libertines, Tiger Army, X, and The Smiths, Barry says the just-released single “Well, Whatever It Was” has “got to be one of the most Southern California sounding songs ever recorded. I hear Jane’s Addiction in the verses, Beach Boys / Weezer in the chorus, and RHCP in the outro. It was LITERALLY produced by the guy from Bad Religion FFS. Everyone was just firing on all cylinders for this one. Joey Waronker’s drumming, TLA’s mix, and Lenny Castro’s percussion all just sent it to the end-zone. This song would go insanely hard in a Shrek film.”
The song comes with a Lance Bangs-produced/directed music video that parodies The Great British Bake Off. It stars Joyce Manor themselves as contestants in The UK Rock Bake Off, with a cast of comedians and fellow musicians portraying Robert Smith, Noel & Liam Gallagher, Morrissey, and Kate Bush as the other contestants. Brett Gurewitz makes a cameo as well. Like “All My Friends Are So Depressed,” this song is on the lighter side for Joyce Manor–Barry’s namedrops should give you a good idea of what to expect–but it still sounds unmistakably like no other band.
To again quote Brett Gurewitz, “Joyce Manor are a quintessential South Bay punk band. But unlike their peers they’re writing timeless songs for the American Songbook. If Barry was a novelist, he’d be Ernest Hemingway. To me, they’re among the most important bands of the last two decades.” Check out the new song and video below.
Joyce Manor also announced that they’ll support the new album on a 2026 spring tour that features the very cool support lineup of Militarie Gun, Teen Mortgage, and Combat. That kicks off in Phoenix on March 9, it surrounds Joyce Manor’s appearances at Coachella, and it hits NYC’s Brooklyn Paramount on March 24. All dates are listed below.
