Japanese Breakfast have announced the follow-up to 2021’s fantastic Jubilee, For Melancholy Brunettes (& sad women), due out on March 21 via Dead Oceans. It’s their fourth album, and it was produced by Blake Mills. “I felt seduced by getting what I always wanted,” Michelle Zauner says of the perils of desire, a recurring theme on the album. “I was flying too close to the sun, and I realized if I kept going I was going to die.”
The first single is the string-laden “Orlando in Love,” which a press release describes as “a riff on John Cheever’s riff on Orlando Innamorato, an unfinished epic made up of 68 ½ cantos by the Renaissance poet Matteo Maria Boiardo.” Hear it below.
Japanese Breakfast plays Coachella in April, and after that she’ll tour North America in the spring, with more shows to follow this summer. Ginger Root opens most shows, and you can see all dates below.
The NYC show is at Brooklyn Paramount on May 9. UPDATE: They’ve added more shows in a bunch of cities, including two more in NYC on May 10 and 11 at Brooklyn Paramount. Tickets for all dates go on sale Friday, January 10 at 10 AM local.
