FACS have announced a new album, Wish Defense, which will be out February 7 via Trouble in Mind. They made it with the late Steve Albini, and in fact this was the last album he engineered. Sanford Parker stepped in to finish the final day of recording, two days after Albini died, and the album was mixed by John Congleton in Electrical Audio’s A room, using Albini’s notes about the session.
This is also the first FACS album since Jonathan Van Herik rejoined the band; he was part of the original lineup (and was in Disappears with Brian Case and Noah Leger, who are the other 2/3rd of FACS) but left after recording their first album. Originally on guitar, he is now on bass. It’s changed up the dynamic significantly as you can hear on Wish Defense‘s title track, which has a spare, nervous feel. “It sounds like Steve recorded it,” Brain Case told Inc in a recent feature on Albini and Electrical Audio studios. “That’s exactly what it sounds like.” You can watch the music video, directed by Joshua Ford, below.
