New York-via-Houston singer/songwriter Denitia will follow 2022’s great Highways with a new album, Sunset Drive, on September 6 via County Road (pre-order). She recently released the lead single “Back To You” and she’s now shared second single “Gettin’ Over,” both of which are great alt-country songs that pick up where Highways left off and keep on driving down that open road. Of the new one, Denitia says:
This is a song of frustration – it’s frustrating always having to struggle just to keep your head above water. The ‘gettin out from under’ is the struggle to just get the bills off your back and basic needs met. It feels like a never-ending cycle of working way too hard and getting too little out of it. This is the anthem for disconnecting from that struggle and finding some way to freedom from the grind.
Of “Back To You” and its video, she said:
There are some things, people, ideas in life that become themes in your life. Even when you walk away from a place, the impact of that experience still stays with you, and you’re forever changed because of it. And no matter where you go, everything reminds you where you came from, or the love that you used to have.
I had this idea to tell the visual story of getting up every day with a big plan to take on the day, but something keeps standing in my way. Over and over, I go through the same steps to move forward, but I keep returning to the same place. The only way to change the result is by changing something in the routine. So I eventually decide to take a different avenue, by taking off on foot instead of repeatedly trying to rev up a reluctant engine. It’s a Groundhog Day-meets-Wes Anderson approach, and I wanted to bring some dimension to the lyrics and bring it to life in an unexpected way.
