So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.
IGGY POP – “FIVE FOOT ONE” (LIVE AT MONTREUX JAZZ FESTIVAL 2023)
Rock icon Iggy Pop’s performance at the 2024 Montreux Jazz Festival is now being released as a live album on January 24 via earMUSIC. You can listen to “Five Foot One” (from 1979’s New Values now. Iggy says, “I give something extra every time I do Montreux Jazz. In ’23 it was deep cuts like ‘Mass Production,’ ‘Endless Sea,’ ‘Five Foot One’ and a hell of a lot of sweat.”

CHASTITY BELT – “THAT GUY”
“We recorded this song in LA in November 2022 with a bunch of other songs that ended up on Live Laugh Love,” says Chastity Belt’s Julia Shapiro of “That Guy,” which is being released on a split 7″ with Austin band Holy Wave. “It didn’t quite make the cut, but I’m excited to release it now! I really love Lydia’s meandering lead guitar line. I remember her having so many different ideas of what she could do, and we were like, do them all! I wrote the lyrics after Chastity Belt had just come back from doing a bunch of touring, and I had to go back to normal life. It’s always a rough transition for me. I feel so alive on tour! There’s this one line in the song about this habit I have with music where, when I find a new song that I love, I listen to it on repeat until it no longer makes me feel anything. Like I’ve drained all the blood from it.”

WISHY – “PLANET POPSTAR”
As they begin the European leg of their fall tour, Wishy have shared a previously unheard track from the sessions that produced their new album Triple Seven. About “Planet Popstar,” Kevin Krauter says, “This song is about the feeling of longing for someone or something which, by all accounts, seems entirely out of reach. They say distance makes the heart grow fonder. We recorded this song during the Triple Seven sessions at the end of last year, but the song ultimately didn’t make it onto the album.”

FULL OF HELL & ANDREW NOLAN – “SPHERE OF SATURN” (ft. JUSTIN K. BROADRICK)
Noisemakers Full of Hell and Andrew Nolan team with the legendary Justin K. Broadrick (of Godflesh, Jesu, etc) for the latest single from their upcoming collaborative LP Scraping The Divine.

DEAD GOWNS – “HOW CAN I”
Portland, ME-based artist Genevieve Beaudoin announced her debut album as Dead Gowns, It’s Summer, I Love You, and I’m Surrounded by Snow, due out on February 14 via Mtn Laurel Recording Co. The first single is “How Can I,” which starts as a delicate folk track which swells to something more fleshed out. “I think as a first single, ‘How Can I’ sets this scene for the entire album – it’s dark, romantic, and disorienting,” Beaudoin says. “I wrote this song when I was in love with someone and couldn’t tell them. I swallowed so many of my feelings down –– and pushed this person and that desire away. I think that dishonesty led to a rot in our connection that was unrevivable.”

ADVANCE BASE – “BRIAN’S GOLDEN HOUR”
Bedroom pop vet Advance Base has shared a woozy new song from his upcoming album Horrible Occurrences.

MAGDALENA BAY – “IMAGE (GRIMES SPECIAL)”
“While recently under house arrest for illegally creating a super species of extremely large naked guinea pigs, Grimes is tentatively returning to music with a few remixes,” Grimes says of her rework of Magdalena Bay’s Imaginal Disk track “Image.” “This one seems extra good tho.”

AB-SOUL – “CRAZIER” (ft. JID)
TDE veteran Ab-Soul’s new album Soul Burger comes out next week, and this new single finds him teaming up with JID.

HACHIKU – “KEEP ON SWIMMING”
Hachiku’s new album The Joys of Being Pure at Heart is out on February 28 via Marathon Artists, and she’s given us another early taste with “Keep on Swimming,” which features Mary Lattimore on harp. “During the pandemic I was trying to make up my mind whether I’d be more successful swimming from Australia back to Germany or digging a tunnel through the earth – this song is the resulting love letter to my family back home and everyone I’ve ever missed,” Hachiku says. “There’s a certain self-inflicted heartache in the repeated goodbyes and the masochism of choosing to move to the other side of the world – always wondering and worrying, yet holding onto the belief that it was for good reason.”

LEE RANALDO – “SKY HAULING”
Former Sonic Youth member Lee Ranaldo contributes a lengthy piece titled Sky Hauling to a split release with Rob Menard (Ascension Sound). Lee says, “Rob and I have been friends and collaborators for years and this split cassette is the first fruit of our friendship. We both contribute over 30 minutes of music, making this a virtual pair of mini-albums on one tape. We hope you enjoy it.”

KASSIE KRUT – “RACING MAN”
Kassie Krut announced their debut self-titled EP, due out on December 6 via Fire Talk, and shared a new single, the percussive, genre-eshewing “Racing Man.”

STRANGER CAT – “DOIN IT RIGHT”
“It is my hope that engagers will feel permission to be fully free in expression, even if just for a moment, and wave your freak flag to celebrate whoever you are fully,” Stranger Cat says of the latest single off her new album Slow Jam Love Letters to My Body in Pieces, which was inspired by Frank Ocean.

Philly rapper Ghais Guevara announced his first album for Fat Possum, Goyard Ibn Said, and new single “Camera Shy” is out now. Read more here.

Mogwai will release The Bad Fire, the band’s 11th album, on January 24 via Temporary Residence Ltd in North America and Rock Action in the UK. This is the new single.

Tunde Adebimpe of TV on the Radio is evoking “Wolf Like Me’ vibes on his first solo single for Sub Pop.

LAUREN MAYBERRY (CHVRCHES) – “CROCODILE TEARS”
CHVRCHES singer Lauren Mayberry will release her solo debut in December and here’s the new single.

RICHARD DAWSON – “POLYTUNNEL”
Richard Dawson will release a new album, End of the Middle, on February 14 via Weird World / Domino. “I wanted this album to be small-scale and very domestic,” says Dawson, whose last record was a widescreen concept album made with Finnish experimental rock band Circle. This is the first single.

DELIVERY – “ONLY A FOOL”
“‘Only A Fool’ might just be the most uninhibited moment in capturing this album’s all-in dynamic at full steam,” say Melbourne’s Delivery of their new single. “Lisa brought in the guitar chords, vocal line and lyrics, and then gave everyone free rein to do their thing which means everyone’s individual flare gets a moment across the track. Also might explain why this song features Delivery’s only ever jam-out ending.” New album Force Majeure is on in January.
