The Radio Dept, Germans @ Bowery Ballroom
After a six year absence, Swedish band The Radio Dept. returned in a big way with Running out of Love, their more political and dance-oriented record to date (and one of 2016’s best LPs). The group are touring as a four-piece and while setlists this time around are favoring the groovier material, they do reach back to their wistful guitar pop days as well. Both tonight and Thursday’s show at Music Hall of Williamsburg are sold out.
Hurray for the Riff Raff, Las Rosas, Papi Juice (DJ) @ Baby’s All Right
Hurray For The Riff Raff expands her sound from her alt-country roots on her new album The Navigator, which is strongly influenced by her Puerto Rican heritage. It comes out this Friday, and it’s great stuff. She plays this small sold-out NYC show ahead of its release, and she’ll be back here for a larger show on 4/20.
Jesca Hoop, Brooke Annibale @ Mercury Lounge
Jesca Hoop has been making underrated folk-ish music for a while now, and she recently signed to Sub Pop who just released her new album Memories Are Now. It’s some of her best work yet.
EXO-TECH w/ Kimbra, Sophia Brous, Dave Harrington, Spencer Zahn, Jeremy Gustin, Danny Meyer, Benjamin Lazar Davis, Cleek Schrey @ Nublu
Kimbra and Sophia Brous’ recurring Exo-Tech live show has them playing improvisational sets with an ensemble and a revolving list of guests with the goal of “[exploring] the intersections between collective improvisation and pop song composition, as much influenced by modern pop and rnb as by free jazz, avant garde improvisation and film music.”
Witch Taint (The Black Metal Dialogues Live), Dave Hill, Phil Costello @ Saint Vitus Bar
In 2004 comedian, musician and gadabout Dave Hill created alter-ego Lance, a teenager living with his parents in Gary, IN who also happened to be the lead singer and sole member of “the most extreme, brutal, and Satanic black metal band of all-time,” There’s a lot more to this story, and you can hear it all — and see Witch Taint live — tonight. Early show, 8 PM.
Royal Thunder, Beast Modulus @ Saint Vitus
Immediately after Witch Taint: Retro riff rockers Royal Thunder are about to release their new album Wick, which is some of their most classic rock radio-inspired stuff yet. They’re touring with Pentagram later this year, but first playing some headlining shows.
Holly Macve @ Rough Trade
Yorkshire-via-Ireland singer/songwriter Holly Macve has really mastered the stylings of American folk, blues, and country, as she proves on her recently-released debut album Golden Eagle (Bella Union). She celebrates it in NYC tonight with this free 8 PM in-store that happens in Rough Trade’s store space (not the performance room).
Thigh Master, Mad Scene, Scupper @ Union Pool
Brisbane, Australia’s Thigh Master make shambly, rough-edged guitar pop that is both jangly and sneering. Catch them tonight with Hamish Kilgour’s Mad Scene and more.
Joseph Arthur @ City Vineyard
Here’s a chance to see the very talented Joseph Arthur up close and personal as part of City Vineyards’ “Voices on the Hudson” series. Only 100 sets sold.
