The Flaming Lips returned this year with Oczy Mlody, which is more of their trademark psychedelic weirdness. Experimental rap group clipping. makes for a cool double bill.
Foxing, Yohuna, Oyama, Snail Mail (solo) @ Brooklyn Night Bazaar
Foxing haven’t released an album since 2015’s gorgeous, post-rocky Dealer, but hopefully a follow-up comes out sooner or later. Their live show is at least as good as their records, and there are good openers tonight too.
Breanna Barbara, Blank Spaces, Winstons @ Knitting Factory
Breanna Barbara makes moxie-soaked bluesy rock, with one foot in the garage and another in ’60s psych that is brought to life in no small part by her smoky voice.
The Luyas, Zula, Sound of Ceres @ Le Poisson Rouge
Montreal band The Luyas have always been just a little off-center, in wonderful ways. On the group’s new album Human Voicing there’s a distinct krautrock-in-space vibe going on, with Jessie Lauren Stein’s celestial vocals and spidery guitar lines hovering atop some serious Can-ed grooves.
Heat, Infinity Girl, Navy Gangs @ Mercury Lounge
More Montreal, but Heat sound right at home in NYC and on Houston St with some distinct Strokes-type no-nonsense rock.
The Radio Dept, Germans @ Bowery Ballroom
After a six year absence, Swedish band The Radio Dept. returned in a big way with Running out of Love, their most political and dance-oriented record to date (and one of 2016’s best LPs). The group are touring as a four-piece and while setlists this time around are favoring the groovier material, they do reach back to their wistful guitar pop days as well. Sold out.
Swaai Boys, Totally Mild, Radiant Reveries @ Rough Trade
Totally Mild’s Mitchell is possessed with an ethereal voice, prone to falsetto and is probably the most striking thing about the band… but it wouldn’t be so engaging without her lovely songs and the just-so jangly arrangements. This is the Australian band’s first of three NYC shows this week.
Tanya Tagaq @ The Appel Room
Inuk throat singer Tanya Tagaq released Retribution back in October which was the follow-up to her Polaris Prize winning 2014 album Animism. On it she takes on the plight of her native Inuit people which she views through a world lens and her unmistakable voice. (It also concludes with a striking cover of Nirvana’s “Rape Me.”) Her records still don’t compare to Tanya’s live shows which are genuinely unforgettable.
Joe Walsh, Mavis Staples, Jackson Browne, Warren Haynes, Michael McDonald, Cyndi Lauper, Dr. John, Gary Clark Jr., Bruce Willis, Derek Trucks, Keb’ Mo’, Aaron Neville, Lisa Fischer, Marc Cohn, Anthony Hamilton, Cece Winans, Susan Tedeschi, William Bell, Amy Helm, Blind Boys of Alabama, Jackie Greene, Sam Moore, Catherine Russell, Joan Osborne, Tash Neal, Marcus King & more @ Beacon Theatre
This show, billed as “Love Rocks NYC,” is the first annual benefit concert for the God’s Love We Deliver charity. “God’s Love We Deliver is New York City’s leading provider of nutritious meals and nutrition counseling for people living with severe illness. Begun as an HIV/AIDS service organization in 1985, today God’s Love cooks and home-delivers more than 1.6 million meals annually to people living with 200 different diagnoses. God’s Love is a non-sectarian organization.”
Neko Case @ Paramount Hudson
She’ll soon be busy with The New Pornographers but Neko Case begins a short U.S tour tonight in Peekskill, NY.
