The Julie Ruin, Harsh Crowd @ Irving Plaza
Kathleen Hanna’s current band The Julie Ruin always put on truly powerful live shows, but given this week’s election, we bet Kathleen is gonna have more fuel for her stage banter than ever.
The Long Ryders, Lorraine Leckie @ Bowery Ballroom
The Long Ryders were maybe the roots-iest band in LA’s jangly “Paisley Underground” scene of the early ’80s, owing much to Gene Clark and Creedence Clearwater Revival. Only together six years, the band still put out one of the best albums of that era — 1984’s stirring Native Sons(which actually featured Clark). Having released a comprehensive box set earlier this year, they’re currently on tour and playing their first NYC show in nearly 30 years tonight.
Slow Club, Annie Hart of Au Revoir Simone, Salt Cathedral @ Le Poisson Rouge
After dabbling in slick pop, UK duo Slow Club have returned to a more organic sound on their new album One Day All Of This Won’t Matter Anymore, thanks in part to working with producer Matthew E White. Tonight is the start of their U.S. tour.
‘The 36th Chamber of Shoalin’ w/ RZA live score @ Town Hall
Wu-Tang Clan have kung fu films in their blood, particularly those of famed producers The Shaw Brothers. So it will be a special treat to see Shaw Brothers classic The 36th Chamber of Shoalin — a film intrinsic to the Staten Island crew’s debut album and mythology — on the big screen with RZA providing a live score.
Sound of Ceres, Brothertiger, Elijah @ Shea Stadium
After three acclaimed albums with hazy sunshine pop group Candy Claws, Karen and Ryan Hover formed new project, Sound of Ceres, whose sound is ethereal, orchestral and lost in space.
Savoy Motel @ Academy Records Annex
Nashville’s Savoy Motel, which features Cheap Time’s Jeffrey Novak and members of Heavy Cream, inhabit a weird sonic world that has one foot in glittery glam, and the other in minimal, twitchy post-punk, with everything southern-fried. This is a free in-store, 6:30 PM.
The Rural Alberta Advantage, Winstons @ Baby’s All Right
It’s been nearly three years since RAA released Mended With Gold. Tonight they’ll be testing new material for the next record (and playing favorites too).
Weyes Blood, Highlife, Faten Kanaan, Matteah Baim @ The Park Church Co-Op
Weyes Blood’s new album Front Row Seat to Earth is another modern lovely update on ’70s magic hour folk, and should sound lovely in this church tonight.
The Men, Honey, Vanity, Lion’s Cage @ Trans-Pecos
For fans who loved The Men’s early, punk records but were less enthused with the last couple, the group’s new record Devil Music is a return to loud, fast and crazed. The record’s out Friday but you can pick it up tonight at this record release party.
!!! (chk chk chk) @ Union Pool
Funk punk band !!! (Chk Chk Chk) are celebrating their 20th anniversary this year (whoa!) and are celebrating with a three-night run Brooklyn’s Union Pool where they’ll try out new material.
Digable Planets @ Webster Hall
Nineties hip hop group Digable Planets came out of retirement this year, and spent the summer on the festival circuit (where they played Celebrate Brooklyn). It’s the re-rebirth of slick.
Talib Kweli (live with full band), DJ Enuff, Brady Watt, NIKO IS, K’Valentine @ Brooklyn Bowl
Brooklyn rap hero Talib Kweli is always very active, and this week he does two full-band shows at Brooklyn Bowl. It seems safe to say that he’ll be fired up at these shows too.
Maxwell, Mary J. Blige @ Madison Square Garden
Earlier this year, neo-soul great Maxwell released his first album in seven years, blackSUMMERS’night. Now he’s on a co-headlining tour with Mary J. Blige, who’s set to release a new album called Strength of a Woman this year.
James Chance & The Contortions, True Groove All-Stars, Bueno, Logan X @ The Bowery Electric
No Wave legends James Chance & the Contortions are releasing The Flesh is Weak, their first new album since the ’80s, this week and celebrating with a release show tonight.
Jesu, Sun Kil Moon @ Warsaw
Jesu and Sun Kil Moon recently formed a creative relationship that resulted in an album earlier this year and a second one is already planned for next year. They recently returned with a new single, “The Greatest Conversation Ever In The History Of The Universe,” which was ten minutes of Mark Kozelek’s stream-of-consciousness lyric writing that addressed tons of topics, including Donald Trump.
Daniel Romano, Caitlin Rose @ Mercury Lounge
Earlier this year, Daniel Romano returned with Mosey, a psychedelic country album with a few hints of Lee Hazlewood. Tonight he begins a tour with another artist who plays genre-crossing country music, Caitlin Rose.
