The Thermals, Heliotropes, The Superweaks @ Brooklyn Night Bazaar
Indie-punk staples The Thermals returned earlier this year with the new album We Disappear and also reissued their fan-fave The Body, The Blood, The Machine for its 10th anniversary. This is their first of two Brooklyn Night Bazaar shows this weekend.
Thee Oh Sees, Surfbort @ Bowery Ballroom
Thee Oh Sees released two albums this year — the crazed A Weird Exits in the Spring and the more gentle An Odd Entrances this month — both featuring the group’s current killer two-drummer lineup. Both tonight and Saturday’s Bowery shows are sold out.
El Perro Del Mar @ Baby’s All Right
El Perro Del Mar‘s new album, KoKoro, which incorporates some Eastern influences into the Swedish singer’s melancholic dancepop sound.
Seu Jorge @ Town Hall
Renowned Brazilian musician Seu Jorge may be best known in the U.S. for his role in Wes Anderson’s The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou where he played shipmate Pelé dos Santos whose covers of David Bowie songs are a sonic thread through the film. He’ll be playing those songs and more Bowie covers across three Town Hall shows. Tonight’s the first.
Savoy Motel, ESCAPE-ISM, The Sueves @ Union Pool
Nashville’s Savoy Motel, which features Cheap Time’s Jeffrey Novak and members of Heavy Cream, inhabit a weird sonic world that has one foot in glittery glam, and the other in minimal, twitchy post-punk, with everything southern-fried. ESCAPE-ISM is the new audio-visual project from Ian Svenonius (Nation of Ulyses, Chain & the Gang).
Bongzilla, Wizard Rifle, SOS @ Goldsounds
Stoner metal greats Bongzilla reunited again earlier this year, and they’re continuing to tour. Tonight they hit the new-ish Bushwick venue Goldsounds.
Anicon, Wayfarer, Skullshitter @ Saint Vitus
NYC blackened thrash outfit Anicon, who released the excellent Exegesses earlier this year, are currently on an Invisible Oranges-presented tour with Denver’s Wayfarer, who released Old Souls this year. Tonight the tour hits Anicon’s hometown.
Anna Homler & Jorge Martin: Breadwoman, Ramzi, Angel Deradoorian @ Knockdown Center
Breadwoman is the long-running experimental/art/music project of LA-based artist Anna Homler and composer Steve Moshier. They released Breadwoman and Other Tales back in 1985, a spoken-word/chanting (in an invented language) album that sounds genuinely alien. With a new reissue of the LP, Breadwoman rises again tonight, alongside some other notable performers.
FIDLAR, SWMRS, The Frights @ Terminal 5
Southern California party punks FIDLAR bring their all-caps tour with SWMRS to NYC tonight. Their mantra, Fuck It Dog, Life’s a Risk, seems a little more prescient now.
Superego, Paul F. Tompkins, Special Guests @ The Bell House
It’s a live taping of the Superego podcast which features Matt Gourley, Jeremy Carter, Mark McConville, and Paul F. Tompkins as they introduce you to a variety of curious characters.
