Mitski, Japanese Breakfast, Jay Som @ Bowery Ballroom
Mitski just released her fantastic new album Puberty 2, which manages to bridge the gaps between heavily-arranged chamber pop, bare-bones folk, and lo-fi punk. This bill is great all around, with dream pop from Japanese Breakfast, and indie rock from Jay Som. It’s their first of two NYC shows, and both are sold out.
Rhett Miller @ City Winery
Whether electric or acoustic, with the Old 97’s or solo, Rhett Miller is always entertaining.
The Cure, The Twilight Sad @ Madison Square Garden
The Cure have been wowing fans on this current tour with three-hour sets filled with favorites, deep cuts, and a few new songs as well. Tonight finishes up their three-night MSG run.
Turnover, Sports, Secret Space, Forth Wanderers @ Mercury Lounge
This is a cool triple bill with Turnover, who make emo-tinged dream pop (dreamo?), scrappy Ohio pop punks Sports, and punkgazers Secret Space.
‘Ask Me Another’ w/ guest Loudon Wainwright III @ The Bell House
The Ophira Eisengberg-hosted ‘Ask Me Another,’ “a rambunctious hour that blends brainteasers and local pub trivia night with comedy and music,” tapes live at The Bell House. Tonight’s guest is singer, songwriter and actor Loudon Wainwright III.
Jon Fine w/ Ira Kaplan (Q&A) @ Saint Vitus Bar
Onetime guitarist for Bitch Magnet (now editor of Inc. magazine), Jon Fine will talk with Yo La Tengo’s Ira Kaplan about his memoir, YOUR BAND SUCKS: What I Saw At Indie Rock’s Failed Revolution (But Can No Longer Hear), which just got released on paperback.
Night Train w/ Wyatt Cenac @ Littlefield
All aboard Wyatt Cenac’s weekly comedy cavalcade, this week with guests Kyle Ayers, Adam Mamawala, Martin Urbano, and more.
