Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Amen Dunes @ Terminal 5
Post rock greats Godspeed You! Black Emperor returned in 2012 after a 10-year absence from releasing albums, and this year they dropped another one. The new stuff is no less colossal-sounding than their classic material, making this band as exciting as ever. Tonight they kick off a 3-night run in NYC, and this one’s with psych band Amen Dunes.
Mike Krol, Dead Painters, Wives @ Baby’s All Right
Mike Krol makes smartass, punky guitar pop and you can hear the sneer coming through loud and clear. After releasing two 10″ records via his own Counter Counter Culture label, Krol moved from Minneapolis to Los Angeles and signed with Merge Records who released his new record, Turkey, in August.
Dave Chappelle @ Gramercy Theatre (2 shows)
Dave Chappelle did a multi-night run at the intimate (for his standards) Gramercy Theatre back in February, and this week he does it again. It continues tonight with 9 and 11:30 PM sets.
Cake Shop Comedy @ Cake Shop
If you miss Big Terrific and Hannibal Buress’ Sunday night show at Knit, and are looking for a new free, weekly comedy show that happens in a rock club and sometimes has big name talent stop by unexpectedly, “Cake Shop Comedy” might do the trick. (Aziz Ansari and Louis CK have both stopped by in recent weeks.) 8 PM.
American Wrestlers, Doubting Thomas Cruise Control, Painted Zeros @ Shea Stadium
American Wrestlers recently released his self-titled album on Fat Possum, an instantly-nostalgic bedroom pop album that at times sounds more than a little like Phoenix. It’s pretty cool stuff.
Frank Turner And The Sleeping Souls, Skinny Lister, Beans on Toast @ Irving Plaza
British folk punk Frank Turner continues his 3-night stand at Irving Plaza tonight in support of his new album Positive Songs For Negative People, with likeminded openers. These are small shows for Frank, and all are sold out.
Frank Turner @ Rough Trade
Before the Irving show, Frank plays a 6 PM in-store at the even smaller Rough Trade.
Punderdome 3000 @ Littlefield
Comedian Jo Firestone and her dad, Fred, co-host this pun-petition to determine the best/groaniest punmakers in all of the land.
Aaron Taos @ Elvis Guesthouse
Originally from New Haven, CT but now based in Brooklyn, songwriter Aaron Taos has a distinctive sound, often just his guitar and voice that is more compelling than that might at first seem.
Rudimental @ Webster Hall
Rudimental came out of the house-pop trend Disclosure helped mainstreamize, and these guys are even more maximalist. They just released their second album, We the Generation.
Matt & Kim, Sevyn Streeter, DJ Envy @ #Uncapped
FADER and vitaminwater are celebrating the 5th anniversary of their #uncapped series with a week of free NYC shows (that you have to RSVP to). The first is headlined by high-energy bubblegum duo Matt & Kim.
CHVRCHES, Mansionair, The Range @ Central Park Summerstage
Having just released their second album, Every Eye Open, CHVRCHES head even more into the pure pop realm. Tonight’s show is sold out.
