You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…
Diana Ross @ Kings Theatre
Brooklyn’s Loew’s Kings Theater has been renovated and officially opens to the public tonight. The first show there will be the legendary Diana Ross, who’s set is sure to be packed with over 50 years of soul, R&B, disco and more.
Matana Roberts, Rain Machine, Ryan Sawyer / Nate Wooley / C Spencer Yeh Trio @ Union Pool
Matana Roberts’ new album, Coin Coin Chapter Three: River Run Thee, is out today and she celebrates with this release show. Matana’s roots are in avant-garde jazz, but this album has more in common with the experimental pop of Laurie Anderson and Julia Holter. Opening is TV on the Radio side project Rain Machine, and a trio from three NYC experimental-scene regulars Ryan Sawyer, Nate Wooley and C Spencer Yeh.
Spain @ Rough Trade
Slowcore pioneers Spain (aka Josh Haden for all intents and purposes) released Sargent Place, their fifth album, last year via Dine Alone Records. On his way to a European tour, Spain are playing NYC tonight.
Jerry Paper, Algiers, Jayyce, Eola @ Palisades
If you taste in pop leans towards eccentrics like Ariel Pink and Dent May, you’ll probably enjoy the oddball song stylings of Jerry Paper whose new album is out in March. The “Special UK Guests” are in fact new Matador signees Algiers (who live in Atlanta but OK).
