Pics: Horsegirl, Iceage, Water From Your Eyes & Lifeguard at SummerStage in Central Park

Matador Records was out in force at SummerStage in Central Park on Thursday night with a free show whose lineup was made up entirely of bands either currently or formerly on the label’s roster: Horsegirl, Iceage, Water From Your Eyes and Lifeguard. Photos by P Squared are in this post.

Headliners Horsegirl and openers Lifeguard are connected in ways beyond being on the same label. They came up in the same Chicago scene, Lifeguard drummer Isaac Lowenstein is the brother of Horsegirl’s Penelope Lowenstein, and he and bassist Asher Case both played in a very early lineup of Horsegirl. It’s been a year since Horsegirl released their debut album, and they played a few new songs they said were written just before their current tour. Horsegirl drummer Gigi Reece also joined Lifeguard on maracas during their set, and all of Lifeguard joined on various percussion instruments during Horsegirl’s set.

Danish band Iceage were both the elder statesmen and more revved up of all the bands on the lineup — they really had the SummerStage crowd going — though Lifeguard had no shortage of energy either. Water From Your Eyes, who added a guitarist in the last year to make them a trio, were also excellent.

Adding to the camaraderie, during each band’s set someone from one of the other bands would come out with a t-shirt cannon that no one actually got to work correctly. Oh well!
