Colors Studio held its inaugural TONES of event at Knockdown Center on Friday (10/13), with performances from Moses Sumney, Mustafa, Bellah, and chlothegod. Pictures by Edwina Hay continue below. Sumney released his new EP Sophcore in August, and he recently shared footage on Instagram of the damage to his Asheville home from Hurricane Helene. “Asheville was devastated by floods and winds from Hurricane Helene and my tiny mountain neighborhood above town was hit by a tornado, rendering my neighbors trapped for days without power and water,” he wrote. “Multiple trees hit my home & one went right through the roof. Several skylights broke & my floors sustained water damage. BUT I’m grateful to have my life and still have a home, unlike others. I was able to clear out my studio and salvage the valuable items. My community won’t have electricity for a long time.” He continued:
People keep asking me what they can do to help — I will be fine but please donate to LOCAL community organizers who are on the ground. I’ve setup a Venmo for mutual aid (@mosesavlfund)- Many in Asheville are without power, the entire city is without water for the foreseeable future, and many people (and artists) have lost their homes and businesses. Yancey County, where we shot Blackalachia, sustained some of the worst devastation. Some of the people doing the hard work are @belovedasheville, @firestormcoop, @pansy.collective, @appmedsolid, and @poderemma. I will redistribute all funds to the above, as well continue to donate to individual victims’ personal fundraising efforts, but I encourage you to donate directly as well. If you can’t give — SHARE! The South is heavily underrepresented and the news cycle is already moving on. We need more people discussing this crisis. George Bush doesn’t care about Black people. Thank you to everyone who has reached out, it’s been too much to respond to everyone immediately!
