Luna just wrapped up a sold-out three-night run at Bowery Ballroom (April 2-4) and we’ve got photos from Night 3 by Ellen Qbertplaya. 22°Halo were supposed to be the opening band on Saturday but had to pull out at the last moment, so Luna opened for themselves with what guitarist Sean Eden called a “Luna-adjacent potluck.” Night one had Buga opening, and night two was opened by Elk City (which Sean Eden played in).
At 9 PM, Sean Eden (guitar), David Voigt (bass), and Christy Davis (drums) came out and played a few songs as The Council on Foreign Relations. Then Lee Wall took over on drums and it was Sean, David, and Lee as the Weeds of Eden. Then Dean Wareham and Britta Phillips came out in matching pink t-shirts and Lee accompanied for a version of Dean’s solo song, “Mystery Guest.” Finally, Sean came back out and it was full Luna with a cover of The Cars’ “Drive” and Velvet Underground’s “Femme Fatale.” Britta sang lead vocals on both.
After a break, Luna came out for their proper set, opening with “Fuzzy Wuzzy.” They also played “I Can’t Wait,” “Cindy Tastes of Barbecue,” “Superfreaky Memories,” “Friendly Advice,” and more. Their main set ended with covers of Lou Reed’s “New Sensations” and Television’s “Marquee Moon,” and they came back for “Chinatown,” Lou Reed’s “Satellite of Love” and finally “23 Minutes in Brussels.”
Night 2 had Steve Wynn come out for the encore, which featured his band The Dream Syndicate’s “That’s What You Always Say” and “Tell Me When It’s Over” as well as Donovan’s “Season of the Witch.”
