Before Baby’s All Right, Death by Audio, Marlow & Sons and Diner, Williamsburg’s South Side was known as “Los Sures” — one of the poorest neighborhoods in NYC, home to a largely Puerto Rican and Dominican community. Shot mostly in 1984 on 16mm, Diego Echeverria’s verite documentary Los Sures offered a portrait of the neighborhood. The film was thought to be lost, but was rediscovered in the late ’00s and Union Docs recently restored the only known print.
You may have seen Los Sures at BAM’s “Indie ’80s” festival last year. It’s about to have a week-long run at new Lower East Side movie house Metrograph, showing from April 15 – 21. Tickets are on sale now.
