Melissa Auf der Maur is preparing to release her new ’90s rock memoir, Even the Good Girls Will Cry, later this month on March 17, and as the release date draws nearer, her onetime Hole bandmate Courtney Love has begun teasing some kind of tour, posting to her Instagram, “So do we tell the kids about the tour @xmadmx ?” The accompanying post is a video portrait from Auf der Maur’s recent New York Times feature, soundtracked by Hole’s “Malibu,” so if your mind went straight to “Hole reunion!,” you’re not alone. Love has said in the past that Hole wouldn’t reunite, but it’s always possible she’s changed her mind — and some have pointed to a 2024 London performance with Billie Joe Armstrong’s Coverups where she said onstage, “later, I’ll be back in Hole.” UPDATE: Courtney confirms “no Hole reunion.”
In the comments on her Instagram post, Love replied to one person who asked, “Miss Courtney is this a drill or do I need to get my purse?!??” She wrote, “Died Blonde 2026 new songs . not 94.” Love has had a new solo album in the works for a while now, and Auf der Maur’s NYT feature discusses her contributing to it:
Last spring, Auf der Maur spent five days in London, where Love lives, recording vocals for her forthcoming album. “I wanted her voice,” Love said, “because it’s robustly an octave over mine. It’s surprisingly, to me, more robust and embodied now than it was in ’98,” when they recorded “Celebrity Skin,” Hole’s Grammy-nominated third album. “Silver, tinkling, all the things I can’t do. We’re perfect together.”
Possibly the tour Love and Auf de Maur are teasing is one for that album, or is part of the book tour Auf de Maur soon begins (although most, but not all, of those dates already have special guests listed). Hopefully we’ll find out soon… stay tuned.
Auf der Maur and Love performed together most recently at a 2018 show at Auf der Maur’s venue Basilica Hudson, and the last time they reunited with drummer Patty Schemel and guitarist Eric Erlandson was in 2012.
