Watch The Beta Band play their first show in 21 years: video, setlist

“I think we owed it to ourselves as a band to fire up the engines and have a trip that was really for us,” The Beta Band’s Steve Mason told us in regards’ to their reunion tour. That tour started on Thursday in Glasgow at the Barrowland Ballroom.

Dressed in their signature jumpsuits and playing on a stage covered in instruments, The Beta Band played a 16-song set that was heavy on The Three EPs, playing all but two of its tracks, plus four Hot Shots II and one each from their self-titled debut and final album Heroes to Zeros. They opened with three from those three early EPs, “Inner Meet Me,” “She’s the One,” and “Push it Out,” and then things got weird with “It’s Not Too Beautiful” from their divisive debut album.

The set also included “Needles in My Eyes,” “Assessment,” “Dr Baker,” and they dropped High Fidelity head-nodding classic “Dry the Rain” well before the final song of the night, playing a nearly 10 minute version of the song. As back in their original run, there was a lot of instrument switching, with Steve Mason on a second drum kit at times. The main set closed with “B + A” from their debut EP, Champion Versions, and “Broke” from Hot Shots II.

They came back for a two song encore: “Squares” from Hot Shots II and wrapped up their first show since 2004 with “House Song” that was always a highlight of their live show.

The Beta Band’s North American tour, which will be An Evening With shows featuring the group DJing before their performance, kicks off October 12 in Vancouver and hits NYC at Brooklyn Steel on November 1 and November 2.
