Patti Smith is no stranger to covering songs by artists who she helped pave the way for (like Nirvana), and she did that again in Dublin last night (6/27). She did a faithful cover of Lana Del Rey‘s “Summertime Sadness” and really belted it like it was one of her own. She dedicated the song to her late husband Fred “Sonic” Smith (of the MC5), told the crowd it made her think of their “wild youth” together, and was visibly emotional during her performance. Watch a fan-shot video below.
Lana recently made her stadium debut at a Fenway Park show that was shortened after a two-hour rain delay and featured surprise guests Quavo, Mason Ramsey, and Stephen Sanchez.
Patti Smith also recently thanked Taylor Swift for namedropping her in the lyrics on her new album The Tortured Poets Department.
My Bloody Valentine’s Kevin Shields was also in attendance at the show, and he filmed the crowd singing “Happy Birthday” to Patti’s daughter Jesse, as Patti herself later posted:
